Craig Newmark recently donated $15 million to found initiatives aimed at improving ethics in journalism. This prompted claims of hypocrisy from many who see Craigslist as the demise of newspapers. Newmark has previously given over $40 million to schools and other ventures to champion journalistic integrity and this latest round of donations includes $5 million to the Poynter Institute and $15 million to launch the Craig Newmark Center for Journalism Ethics and Security at the Columbia School of Journalism. Of course, the issue with declining newspaper subscriptions is complex.
